2.4 Waxed Canvas

Waxed canvas is a fabric option that has been used for centuries due to its water-resistant, and windproof properties (some call it one of the oldest materials in the world). It has in recent times, re-surfaced as a go-to fabric for anyone that fits the mold of an outdoorsman. Or anyone looking for a durable, high quality, weather resistant fabric for that matter.

History:

Early use can be traced back to the mid-19th century where Scottish sailors would rub fish oil on their sailcloth in an effort to weatherproof the material. Later on, it quickly became a favorite fabric for the military. Mostly because of its waterproofing nature, comfort, fit, and durability. Today, you'll see it being used for rugged outerwear along with products such as; duffel bags of all sorts, dopp kits, and more. From iconic brands such as Duluth Pack, Filson, L.L. Bean, and Eddie Bauer to younger brands like Buffalo Jackson, Blue Claw Co and Frost River.

How it is made:

Waxed cotton is made by saturating cotton fabric with a wax substance. Historically, natural waxes such as beeswax were used. Modern methods however, may incorporate synthetic waxes or a combination of natural and synthetic waxes. The wax is applied to the cotton fabric, and heat or pressure is used to ensure it penetrates the fibers.

Here are some key characteristics of waxed cotton:

1. Water Resistance: Waxed cotton's main advantage is its excellent water resistance. The waxed coating prevents water from permeating the fabric, making it highly effective in keeping you dry during wet conditions. However, it is important to note that extreme or prolonged exposure to heavy rain may eventually saturate the fabric.

2. Windproofing: In addition to its water resistance, waxed cotton provides a degree of wind-proofing. The wax coating creates a barrier that helps block wind, keeping you comfortable in blustery conditions.

3. Breathability: While waxed cotton is water-resistant, it still retains some level of breathability, allowing moisture and heat to escape from within the garment. This helps prevent overheating and discomfort during physical activities.

4. Durability: Waxed cotton is a durable fabric that can withstand significant wear and tear.

5. Styling: Waxed cotton is commonly used in the production of outdoor clothing such as jackets, coats, and hats. It is also popular for bags, backpacks, and accessories due to its combination of style and functionality. Waxed cotton items are often associated with rugged outdoor activities and a classic, vintage-inspired aesthetic. Appearance-wise, waxed canvass only gets better looking with time. Almost like a good quality leather. Every nick, scratch, and crease becomes a statement of character, and a story to tell.

Environmental considerations:

Some manufacturers produce waxed cotton using eco-friendly methods and natural waxes, which can make it a more sustainable choice compared to synthetic materials. Purchasers of waxed canvas product do so with the intent that they will have and use it for a very long time.

Care:

Proper care is essential to maintain the performance of waxed cotton. Avoid machine washing or dry cleaning, as these processes can strip away the wax coating. Instead, wipe off surface dirt with a damp cloth, and reapply wax periodically to rejuvenate the water-resistant properties. Also, the wax will rub off with time. Therefore an occasional re-waxing will be necessary. Especially if you want to maintain the benefits. We will post instructions on how you can do this or yourself in a future blog post. Our recommendation is to re-wax your products on an annual basis.

In conclusion, waxed cotton is a versatile and time-tested fabric that offers excellent water resistance and windproofing. Its durability and classic appearance make it a popular choice for outdoor clothing and accessories, providing protection and style for various activities and weather conditions. Regular maintenance and re-waxing can prolong the life of waxed cotton garments, ensuring they remain functional and fashionable for years to come.
